“That Nawazuddin Siddiqui movie..” is all I hear after speaking the name of the movie ‘Manjhi: The Mountain Man’, the story of Dashrath Manjhi (Nawazuddin) who is just a low caste poor man, struggling throughout his life, living in a remote village cut off from the world by a mountain range. The story depicts his immense love for his wife Phaguniya (Radhika Apte), who died slipping from the mountain while bringing him food. Overwhelmed by grief, Dashrath decided to carve out a path through the mountain, so that no one else would suffer his fate. For 22 years, all by himself, with just a hammer and a chisel, he hammered away at the rocks, till the path was carved.

Manjhi: The Mountain Man

Manjhi is a fiction inspired by true events. The story is remarkable. Dashrath was married to a girl in his childhood. After growing up, he went to work in the mines. He found a girl whom he liked at once. After returning to his village, he found out that the girl was the one he was married to, Phaguniya. Phaguniya’s father refuses to accept Dashrath’s as her husband, so he decides to elope with her. Dashrath decides to work across the mountain for the care of his family. Phaguniya, while bringing food for him slipped from the mountain. Dashrath carried her to the hospital across the mountain but his attempts were all in vain as the doctor declared her dead.

Dashrath devastated by loss of his love decided to carve out the mountain all by himself using just a hammer and a chisel. He also tried acquire Government’s help but was cheated by the corrupt people. The story of struggle starts from the very beginning, due to his low caste and runs to the very end. All incidents were perfectly depicted by the Director Ketan Mehta. After 22 years Dashrath completed the herculean task all by himself leaving us with the new meaning to the words determination, persistence, perseverance and the most important of all ‘Love’.

Nawazuddin’s remarkable performance in the movie is beyond words, the supporting cast included Tigmanshu Dhulia, Pankaj Tripathi whose performances were exactly as desired, Director Ketan Mehta however failed carry the emotional heft of the movie to optimum level.
Overall, the movie portrayed the life of Dashrath Manjhi giving good intentions or in Dashrath Manjhi’s words “Great! Fantastic! Alive!”

Also, there is a need to mention that the movie was leaked on the torrent sites days ago, much before the official release, which has resulted in a huge loss. An earnest request would be to watch this movie in theaters despite of your laptops.
