Ever thought how it feels to break a 60 year old record at your Alma Mater? Shocked?

Here we are, bringing to you the man of the moment, Pinank Surati sir, who broke a 60 year old record in Discus throw at the 87th Annual Athletic Meet held on 15 and 16th of January 2016 at Indian School Of Mines, Dhanbad.

Q1) How does it feel on achieving something of this magnitude?

I feel very elevated and happy on such an achievement. It took a lot of sacrifice and hardwork on the part of everyone associated with training me. Also nothing is possible without determination and sheer will power.

Q2) What was your training agenda for this?

I train regularly for around 2 ½ to 3 hours daily. Sometimes I had to bunk classes so that my schedule didn’t get affected. My schedule includes jogging for a few rounds, followed by a few 100m bursts (sprint). Then I shift onto regular exercises which included stretching, crunching and push ups. After this rigorous session I shift my focus i.e. towards Discus throw. This record bears testimony to the fact that hard work does indeed pay off!

Q3) Tell us more about yourself and your achievements?

Frankly speaking (smiling) my journey in sports at ISM began as a swimmer. I hold the 50 m freestyle record in swimming at ISM Dhanbad. I have been interested in sports since a very young age. I loved playing cricket but didn’t pursue it further. Then swimming piqued my interest. After a brief but successful journey in swimming I switched over to shot put. My coach, Sadhukhan Sir, on observing my potential, advised me to switch over to discus throw. This proved to be a masterstroke for my career. I went to IIT Roorkee and bagged the 4th position there in the inter-IIT meet. I also bagged the bronze medal in the District Level Championships organised last year and hope to better my performance i.e. my medal’s colour at this year’s meet.

Q4) How confident were you about this event in the meet?

2

I was pretty confident that I would feature in the top 2 at least. Talking of the record, I came to know about it till the eve of the meet. When I came to know of the record, which stood at 30.40m, I felt hopeful that I could better it. I am glad I was able to better the record throwing the discus to a distance of 30.60 m.

Q5) Last but not the least, what do you feel about the current scenario of sports in ISM?

We have a team of very hardworking and efficient athletes. Also the coaching staff, led by Sadhukhan sir is extremely helpful, motivating and dedicated towards supporting us. Their guidance is very helpful. But there is a serious dearth of Infrastructure and facilities in the college. As I previously stated, I had to bunk classes to train just because we don’t have any specific area marked for Discus and later on it gets too crowded because footballers practice there daily. Therefore, I would like to request the college authorities to improve the sports facilities given to us athletes

We earnestly thank you Sir for your valuable time. We hope you achieve much more success in the future and bring even more laurels for yourself and for ISM Dhanbad.
